To Soar Like Eagles—Part 3
By: Alan Smith
Isaiah 40:31: “But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” (NIV)
“Eagles, start your engines. All aboard for flight number Isaiah 40:31,” I heard the still small voice say. Could this be the day that you “soar on wings like eagles”? I believe this can be true for you and for me. Let’s look a little deeper into this flight manual of the spirit.
When I take an airplane flight, I must go to the ticket counter to check-in myself and my baggage. The goal is for my baggage to get to my destination with me. The attendant takes my baggage and weighs it to make sure it has not exceeded the weight limit, because the airplane cannot make lift-off if it has excessive weight. So how does this apply to the spiritual world? Good question! This verse not only identifies for us, but also calculates for us, what is too heavy for spiritual flight. Isaiah has identified the excess weights as “grow weary” and “not be faint”.
Let’s study this excess weight further. We’ll look at the Hebrew word “weary” in the Strong’s concordance to capture the meaning of this first excess weight Isaiah identified: yaw-gah'; a primitive root; properly, to gasp; hence, to be exhausted, to tire, to toil: KJV - faint, (make to) labour, (be) weary. I don’t know about you, but this sounds like my Christian life! Are your labors for the Lord leaving you feeling exhausted and tired? Then this probably means you are carrying the excess weight of “weary”.
Now, let’s look again in the Strong’s concordance at the second baggage that Isaiah identified as “to faint”: yaw-af'; a primitive root; to tire (as if from wearisome flight). Can you believe this one? To “faint” means that you are still tired from the previous flight.
Please consider what I am about to say. To board and lift-off on this new flight of the spirit means you must leave the old baggage of the previous flight behind. On this flight of the Spirit, no baggage is needed. You do not need to take your clothes because the garments you will be wearing are the garments of another. They are white as snow, washed in grace, and their weight is an unbelievable weight of “zero”.
How can I receive this weightless garment? You must first ask, and then you will receive. I am sure that many of you have already trusted in the Lord and have asked Him to come into your life. If so, I have only one question to ask you. Have you put on the garment that He gave you when you first trusted in Him, or have you put on the garment of religion? You might wonder how to know if you have or not. You can know because His garment is very light and is not a burden. You must trust His garments and not your own. Our garments have weight; His do not. When you put on Jesus Christ and His garments, you can soar on wings like eagles. When you soar you can feel joy, peace, contentment, and sometimes, just plain happy. This should give us reason to smile a lot!

To Soar like Eagles—Part 2

Isaiah 40:31: “But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” (NIV)
Okay, do you still want to fly? Well, if so, then let’s look more at flight number Isaiah 40:31 and continue to prepare for take off. In our preparations from last time, we learned about the spiritual fuel that we need in our spiritual tanks. How our “hope” is to be in the Lord, and in return, the Lord will fill us with “faith”.
The writer of the book of Hebrews unlocks more of the mystery of this supernatural substance called faith. Hebrews 11:1: “faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” This is unbelievable! Something that I cannot see has “substance”. So “faith” is some kind of spiritual substance, which must be preceded by “hope” before it will materialize. The writer of Hebrews goes on to say that the only “evidence” which I can use is the “evidence” that cannot be seen. This indicates that the “evidence” we see, life’s circumstances, is off limits and cannot be used. If we use this kind of “seen evidence”, it will only pollute the spiritual fuel that is necessary to get this eagle off the ground. Do not let your spiritual fuel be polluted with this slime. We need unpolluted, undiluted, unpooted spiritual fuel from heaven. Sorry, I guess I got a little carried away in my descriptive words. But regardless, we need to understand that the evidence of life’s circumstances does not equal a spiritual truth in our lives.
This evidence of life’s circumstances is not the prophetic voice that should speak into our future. Do not bring glory to these “past” events of sorrow and doubt. We should only let Christ write our future. Remember, we decide who writes our future: Christ or crises. Where are we to appropriate our hope? We are to appropriate our hope in the One who can give us the spiritual fuel of “faith” to take us from where we are to where we are going. We need to take this spiritual flight: a flight that will take us into the very presence of God. To a destination that only God of heaven could chart for each one of us. Remember, He wants us to make it more than we want to. If God is for us, I believe we will make it. Let’s put our hope in Him today!
Now, let’s look at the next part of this verse. It says: “They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” If we are going to soar like eagles, we must start running down this spiritual runway. The runway must be somewhat long because Isaiah exhorts us to not grow weary while running. If we continue to hope in the Lord, which is what gives us our direction on the runway, this verse indicates that the Lord will renew our strength. Our strength comes from above; not from within. Our hope is within. This hope will be sent on a spiritual journey on the wings of prayer to the One, who in return, will send us strength.
I encourage you this day to take your eyes off life’s circumstances and place your hope, more than ever, in Christ. You can trust Him. He will renew your strength to run down the runway of life and make it over the trees to climb into the heavens and live in the very presence of God.
Blessings,
Alan

Isaiah 40:31: But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. (NIV)
I always wanted to be able to fly. Have you ever felt this way? Did you ever have a dream where you could fly over the countryside? You know, like Peter Pan. It appears this will never happen in my natural life; or could it? What about the life of the Spirit? Isaiah says there will be a people who will “soar on wings like eagles”. Let’s take a flying lesson from the scriptures on flight number Isaiah 40:31. Okay, prepare for take off.
How are we to get this “eagle” off the ground? The first thing this scripture tells us is we must have the strength to fly. So how do I get this strength—this spiritual jet fuel? I believe this verse is telling us we get it from the Lord. The Lord is my spiritual and emotional fueling station. I have included the word emotional because for this eagle to fly, I must get into the correct e-motion to get off the runway.
The second thing we must do is check our fuel tank readings. As we scan the gauges, we find the fuel gauge, which has a name called “hope”. Over the gauge are these words: “FILL ONLY WITH HIGH QUALITY FAITH”. I have always wondered how much faith I have in my tank; but I know I can’t tell you how much faith I have. I don’t know if I have a little or a lot; but I can tell you how much hope I have. So, hope is the way I can read how much faith I must have to get this eagle off the ground. A little hope equals a little faith, which equals a little spiritual fuel. Therefore, a lot of hope equals a lot of faith, which equals a lot of spiritual fuel. Now I have more understanding of why life’s circumstances are trying to rob me of my hope. My spiritual enemy knows that if he can keep my spiritual fuel tank empty, I will not even attempt “take off”.
Life’s circumstances are like tall trees at the end of the runway. It is amazing how we look at the tall trees and say, “I know I can’t make it over them; I can’t make lift off. I know the trees, which are life’s circumstances, are just too tall. I will never get enough momentum to clear them.” This unbelief is a lack of hope. Unbelief is a hole in our spiritual fuel tanks in which “faith” will leak out upon the ground. Our hope is not to be appropriated in the tall trees or in ourselves or in the evidence of life’s circumstances. Our hope is to be in the Lord. As we appropriate this “hope” in the Lord, it is supernaturally and instantaneously changed into “faith”. Hope is what I send to the Lord; and Faith is what He sends back into my spiritual tank. Faith is a gift from God.
Eph. 2:8-10: For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-not by works, so that no one can boast. (NIV)
God sends us this spiritual fuel because He wants to by His grace, as you can see in this scripture. We do not deserve it; He just wants us to make it. He wants us to make it off the runway and soar with the eagles and get a perspective that we can only get from high places.
Blessings,
Alan

The Kite with No Tail
By: Alan Smith
We are living in a time where many people, and our country, have no direction. Have you ever been
there? It seems we are just blowing in the wind; letting the cares of life take us where they may. We are
just floating along life’s journey with seemingly no purpose or direction. Are we giving up? Do we not
care? Well, God cares, and we also need to care.
I had a dream/vision about this very issue and have written a little parable that will perhaps help us gain
new life and new direction for the season that is upon us.
“Parable of the Kite with no Tail”
Imagine this: it is springtime. The flowers are blooming, the trees are budding, and the grass is green. All
the colors of spring are very bright. Everything is growing and coming to life. The excitement of new life
fills the air, as we smell the fragrance of a new day dawning. Old things are passed away and all of
creation is coming into newness. This is where the vision starts unfolding and here is what I saw.
I saw “children” as they learned to fly their kite. The children were in the meadow flying a kite. It was
obvious that they were on a great adventure; but they were not having very good success with their
kite. The kite would go up in the air fast, and then go side to side as if to say, "I will go where I please."
The kite did not have a particular direction in which to go. It just knew that it wanted to go somewhere
without anyone controlling it. Only the resistance of the string would hold the kite down. The kite was
so fighting the resistance that it would go around and around until it would crash to the ground. The
children would launch the kite again, only to repeat the same events of the day.
Suddenly, there appeared an old man: a grandfather of the children. He sat with them and taught them
about the laws of the wind and told them that their lives were like a kite. He told them how the wind
was created for their good; how his Father enjoyed blowing onto the ground with his breath, making it
possible for things of the earth to soar. He told them that God created them to fly and soar in life just as
the kite. He shared with them that it took three things for the kite to soar. The first thing was wind, the
second thing was a tail for their kite, and the third thing was resistance.
The grandfather first addressed the wind. He said to them, “The wind represents the Holy Spirit of God.
When He blows into your life, you have the power to soar. Without the wind the kite cannot leave the
ground. Its power must come from another, for the kite has none of its own. The wind of the Spirit is
always in unity with the Words of God.”
Next, the grandfather addressed the tail of the kite. He told the children that their kite did not have a
tail, and they asked him why it needed a tail. He shared with them that the kite needed direction for its
journey. He told them that without a tail the kite could not go very high and that it would crash to the
ground every time. He said that the tail felt like a weight to the kite; but in fact, the tail gave the kite
direction. He said that the tail of the kite would not let the kite go astray when it was attached to the
kite. He then told them that the tail was "the Word" for them that day. He said that it was very
important for them to hear "the Word"; for it was “the Word" that would give them direction to fly
higher in this new season and not crash to the ground.
As he shared, he looked to the ground and saw the tail of the kite lying there. The grandfather asked
them why the tail was there. The "children" said that the tail kept getting tangled in the string and they
thought that it could fly better without it. It appeared to be in the way. The grandfather took an old
Bible out of his pocket. He tore the pages out of it and tied them to the kite’s tail. The old man taught
them that the kite represented their lives. He told them that life was a great adventure through which
everyone would fly. They would want to fly high and fast so they could see everything. They would want
to go where they wanted to, anytime they wanted to. However, without the Word of God to give them
direction, they would only fall to the ground.
The last understanding the grandfather addressed with the “children” was resistance. When they resist
the Devil, which is a negative force, then the wind, the Spirit of God, which is a positive force, would
blow against them. He told them that without resistance the kite would not have a "negative" from
which to trust unto a "positive". When the kite agreed with the resistance and used it for its good, it
would take a negative resistance and "transform" it into the power that would cause the kite to go
higher. He then told the children what his heavenly Father had told him.
Romans 8:28: And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who
are the called according to his purpose. (KJV)
After sharing with them, the grandfather told them it was time to go home, and they could come again
another day.
When the Word of God is attached to our lives, it is then that we have direction. This will cause us to
soar higher and higher in life. When we soar higher, we can begin to see things as God sees them.
What truly supports the fabric of a kite? It is the cross that is behind it. Open the fabric of your heart
today because the cross of Christ is supporting you. The fabric cannot support itself. Let the wind of the
Spirit of God blow against you. Take the Word of God and let it give you direction for this new season.
When resistance comes, remember that it is necessary for you to go to higher places than you have ever
been before. Do not despise the resistance as it can be used for your good. It’s your choice. Choose this
day to believe God. He will take you on a journey that is unbelievable!
Blessings,
Alan

C.S. Lewis and Revival
From time to time, I will be sending out a video to teach us and remind us of the workings of God in His people. If God did it once He can do it again through you.
This week I have chosen to send out a video about C.S. Lewis. Read this short description of who he was.
Clive Staples Lewis (1898–1963) was one of the intellectual giants of the twentieth century and arguably one of the most influential writers of his day. He was a Fellow and Tutor in English Literature at Oxford University until 1954, when he was unanimously elected to the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at Cambridge University, a position he held until his retirement.
Lewis wrote more than thirty books, allowing him to reach a vast audience, and his works continue to attract thousands of new readers every year. C. S. Lewis’s most distinguished and popular accomplishments include Mere Christianity, Out of the Silent Planet, The Great Divorce, The Screwtape Letters, and the universally acknowledged classics in The Chronicles of Narnia. To date, the Narnia books have sold over 100 million copies and been transformed into three major motion pictures.
Here is a quote by him, “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else”.

‘To Watch This Hurts’: Afghanistan Veteran Edward Graham Urges Prayer
By Gabrielle Redcay • August 17, 2021
Edward Graham held an Afghan child during one of six deployments in the nation. Now, the 16-year Army veteran is urging Christians to pray for the country in chaos.
As heartbreaking as it is for anyone to watch the chaos unfolding in Afghanistan right now, it’s all the more painful for those who served and sacrificed in the country.
“To watch this hurts,” admitted Edward Graham, a 16-year Army veteran and Billy Graham’s grandson. “I spent years there and lost many friends. There’s many Afghan people that I love.”
When the United States military invaded Afghanistan in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Graham was training at West Point. After graduating in 2003, the former special operations officer spent six of eight combat deployments there.
So even though Graham left the military to work with Samaritan’s Purse, he’s well aware of the situation in Afghanistan—where Taliban fighters quickly regained control after the withdrawal of U.S. forces.
“I watched the Taliban up close, [and] they are the very definition of evil,” he attested. “The Afghan people are trying to flee that. They’re trying to get away. They know the torture that’s coming.”
Very few people in the country are safe right now.
American allies are a target. Women who went to work or school are considered a threat. Children are at risk. And Christians—who already had to practice their faith in secret—now face even greater persecution.
“Pray for peace in Afghanistan that man could never bring about. … My hope has never been in man. It’s in Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior, alone.” —Edward Graham
“If anyone knows they are Christians, they will be marked, hunted and killed,” said Graham, who met members of the underground church during his time in Afghanistan. “The Taliban has no acceptance for any faith outside of their militant form of Islam.”
Knowing just how dire the situation is in this country, the former Army ranger is praying for a miracle. And he’s urging Christians not to “pass by” the Afghan people, following the example of the Samaritan man from Jesus’ parables.
“He was a Samaritan, and [the stranger] was a Jew. … These are Afghans, and we’re Christians. We may not see eye to eye in our faith, but these are people that are going to be persecuted because they didn’t support the Taliban. They didn’t support evil, and evil is going to try to stomp them out.”
So even if you haven’t met Afghan people like Graham has, every person you see in the news—desperately trying to escape this country in chaos—is an object of God’s unimaginable love.
“Jesus loves them, died for them. God sent His only Son that they’d have eternal life,” Graham said. “That’s true in this country, that’s true in Afghanistan, that’s true around the world.”
How You Can Pray for Afghanistan
Pray for the safety and salvation of the Afghan people.
Pray for persecuted Christians in Afghanistan.
Pray for a peaceful pathway that would allow people to escape.
Pray for countries accepting and resettling refugees.
Pray for the fall of the Taliban.

Pray for the People of Afghanistan
Join Me This Sunday, August 22, for a Day of Prayer.
Dear Friend,
Thousands of people are desperately trying to escape from Afghanistan after the country’s fall to the Taliban.
These Islamic extremists, who have now taken Afghanistan back by force, have a history of brutality, including beheadings and public executions. Time is short and the need is urgent, and that is why I am calling for a day of prayer this Sunday, August 22.
With the Taliban blocking access to the airport and all exit routes, this is a life-or-death situation for Christians and other religious minorities, and all those who worked with or for America over the past two decades. There is no hope for these people to get out safely—apart from a miracle from the hand of God—and that’s what we need to pray for.
It is a difficult and tragic situation. Will you please join me in praying for God to intervene in a mighty way?
Sincerely,

Truth Awaits
By: Alan Smith
• John 16:13: But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
We are living in a day in which we must be able to hear from the Holy Spirit like never before. Perhaps the question for all of us is “Can we really handle the truth when we hear it?” The truth is that we are afraid of truth because truth speaks change to our lives, and we don’t always embrace change. We ignore, or sometimes even deny, truth because of our fear of change or confrontation. Why do we stay in denial and run from the truth when the truth can set us free? Could it be that truth ignored is truth lost?
There are so many questions that we must answer within ourselves to move forward with truth in our lives. In John 8:32 Jesus encouraged us to take hold of the truth when He said: Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. Perhaps we are waiting for the truth to set us free; but the truth is: truth must be captured and experienced before freedom comes into our lives. Truth is a word that requires action. Why search for truth in the Bible and in various other places, if it only serves to flatter our ears? We must put truth into action and embrace change.
Do you feel stuck in your life? Do you feel there is no where to turn? Do you feel that you are held captive by your circumstances? All three of these questions represent false truths in our lives. Why do we appropriate our faith in these false truths? It is amazing to me how we have more faith for the non-truths than we do for truth. It is imperative that we embrace “real truth”, and it is only then that we will walk in real freedom. The more truth we walk in, the more freedom we will experience in life. If we say no to truth or ignore truth, then truth is lost in that moment of time, and thus, the freedom that came with it. True freedom comes from life; and true life comes from the truth that comes from the Spirit of the Lord.
In the John 16:13 we see that the Holy Spirit comes to us with the purpose of guiding us into all truth. Truth must be very important if this is the mission for which the Holy Spirit was sent. Do you see? He was sent as the Spirit of Truth, our comforter. As the Holy Spirit guides us into truth, He will also comfort us during the changes brought about by truth and during the confrontation with truth. I am encouraged to know that it is possible to live in innumerable truths each day of my life, since the Holy Spirit is guiding me in this fantastic journey. Consider this: when we are living in truth, it is then that we can live in true reality; and only then, that we can move forward in life. New truth awaits anyone who has a teachable spirit.
Let’s explore another possibility. Could revelations of truth be plotted on the map of life’s journey to lead us to our created destination? With the same token, could living a life in non truth equal a created destination of unhappiness, sadness, and much confusion? Truth vs. non-truth: it is our choice, and in choosing, we are choosing the light or the darkness; life or death. So how can we know if someone is speaking truth to us? Let’s look at the following scripture to gain more understanding.
• Eph. 4:15: Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ.
First, I can see that whoever has truth to give to another must give it from a heart of love. This indicates to us that truth must be immersed or coated in this love before it can be swallowed. If truth were a spiritual vitamin pill, it would have to have a buffered coating of love to be received into the heart of man. Likewise, as we walk in truth with this coating of love, we will grow more into the likeness of Christ, as He is the example of living in truth coated in love. How can we know this love coating is genuine? Let’s read another verse.
• 1 Corinthians 13:5-7: Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres.
This love is a love that is very happy and full of joy. It rejoices in this new truth that is being given. This love is a love that protects the one who is receiving the new revelation of truth. This love is a love that trusts in the truth that is being given. This love is a love that never loses hope in the truth and what it accomplishes. This love is a love that has a resolve and does not waiver. This love is a love that perseveres and will not give up under the most unbelievable odds. Furthermore, this lovely truth will sometimes cause you to be viewed as an enemy instead of a friend. We can see this in the following verse.
• Gal. 4:16: Have I now become your enemy by telling you the truth?
Truth in love, when it is received by the recipient, causes things to change. This change to our lives is not always received gladly, and it may even cause us to feel uncomfortable. Truth is like a knife unto a surgeon: it will cut and bruise, but healing can then begin. It is the truth that brings us out of darkness into light. Light is what we need to see in this dark world. More light is needed now than ever before.
• Eph. 5:8-10: For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth)
We see in the verse above that we were once in darkness. This darkness is a life of living in false truths and of living in denial of real truths. As the Holy Spirit guides us into real truths of reality, we start walking in light. This new-found light brings us into a new world of life and joy. We are encouraged to be children of this light, as it will bring forth a fruit of goodness, righteousness, and more truth. Be blessed this day as we call upon the Holy Spirit to guide us into more truth every day. And may He comfort us as we face the changes that “real truth” will bring into our lives.
Blessings,
Alan
