Acts 20, Ministry, False Teaching, and Noahide Laws - Part 2

I believe every Christian is called into the work of ministry. That calling may be public or behind the scenes, but it isn't limited to pastors or well-known evangelists.

In this lesson from Acts 20, I also return to Paul's warning about false teaching and why every message must be tested against God's Word.

Every Believer Has a Place in Ministry

Apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, and evangelists are given to equip the saints for the work of ministry. Because of that, I believe every believer has a calling to serve.

Ministry is not only for pastors or well-known Christian leaders. If you see yourself as a spectator Christian, I want to put some pressure on you, praise God. The church should recognize that every person in the body has a part in serving the kingdom.

That ministry doesn't have to look like Billy Graham's. It can be practical service. Some people help with food when there is a need. Others show up for a wedding, support someone in difficulty, or faithfully serve wherever they are needed. Those are ministries.

I have found that when I tell people God tends to give each person a name for their ministry, many begin to recognize what is already in their hearts. One person once told me, "I don't know the name of my ministry except I'm supposed to help everybody." I told him to call it the "Helping Everybody Ministry."

Some people are a number one person, while others are a number two, three, or four person. The gift of helps is still ministry. A ministry doesn't have to be famous to be useful in the kingdom of God.

The Christian Fellowship of Ministries

At New Life Church, I am starting the Christian Fellowship of Ministries so the church can recognize, pray for, bless, and send out the ministries within the body.

This fellowship isn't meant to be complicated. If you feel led to participate, you can go to the church website, open the Ministry tab, and choose Christian Fellowship of Ministries. There is a brief definition and a form to complete. The elders review each submission, and if they have questions, they can speak with the person directly.

The fellowship will include a directory of participating ministries, with contact details if someone wants to share them. Every three to six months, we plan to gather for a meal, hear a speaker who can impart to those serving the gospel, pray together, and help one another.

I believe there is supernatural power when the church agrees, prays, and blesses a ministry out loud. The church has spent plenty of time discussing what the church is not. I want us to choose to do what the church is called to do, acknowledge God's people and help them walk in their ministry.

God's Will Comes With God's Grace

Billy Graham said:

"The will of God will not take us where the grace of God cannot sustain us."

I use that statement because the will of God is the goal, while the grace of God is the provider. You can go forward in the will of God because He equips you with grace for what He has called you to do.

A Pledge of Allegiance to the Bible

During the service, I led a pledge of allegiance to the Bible. Some place a hand on their Bible, some on their heart, and some simply recite it.

"I pledge allegiance to the Bible, God's holy word. I will make it a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path, and will hide its words in my heart that I might not sin against God."

I try to say that pledge from memory five or six times a day. Since I began doing it, the Holy Spirit has brought those words back to me when I am in situations where I need to make sure I act like a Christian.

The pledge reminds me that I have given my allegiance to God's Word. Scripture corrects me, and I want it hidden in my heart.

Brother Andrew and the Persecuted Church

Brother Andrew, known as "God's Smuggler," was a man devoted to the Word of God. Andrew van der Bijl was a Dutch missionary who smuggled Bibles behind the Iron Curtain during the Cold War.

He drove a Volkswagen Beetle filled with Scriptures into communist countries. At border checkpoints, he prayed, "Lord, in my bag, in my luggage, I have Scripture that I want to take to Your children. When You were on earth, You made blind eyes see. Now I pray that You make those seeing eyes blind."

In 1955, he attended a communist youth congress in Poland. His suitcase held a Bible, a change of clothes, and one hundred tracts called The Way of Salvation. There, he found churches that desperately needed Bibles, prayer, and support. Many Christians felt isolated because they believed the rest of the world had forgotten them.

That work grew into Open Doors, an international ministry that distributes Bibles and Christian books while also training and supporting persecuted Christians. Brother Andrew traveled in the Islamic world and met with leaders of Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and Hezbollah as an ambassador for Christ. He died in 2022 at age 94.

Many people may not have heard of this man, but faithful service is known to God.

Paul's Warning About Wolves in Acts 20

In Acts 20, Paul met with the Ephesian elders and gave them final instruction before leaving. He told them to take heed to themselves and to all the flock over which the Holy Spirit had made them overseers. They were to feed the church of God, purchased with His own blood.

Paul warned that grievous wolves would come after his departure and would not spare the flock. He also warned that men would arise from within the church, speaking perverse things to draw disciples after themselves. Acts 20 records Paul's warning to the Ephesian elders.

I see two kinds of danger in that warning:

• False teaching that comes from outside the church.

• False teaching that rises from within the church.

The internal danger can be worse because it comes from among the people. A false teacher has a goal of capturing the thinking of others and drawing disciples after himself.

One of the first things I look for is motive. Is there a servant's heart, or is the message all about that person? If everything centers on the speaker's own importance, I would run from it.

Still, I also have to ask, "What about the false teacher in me?" There are places in Scripture where I don't agree with what I believed a year ago. Therefore, I don't expect every believer to agree on every topic. Yet every teaching should be tested against Scripture.

Gnosticism and Secret Spiritual Knowledge

Gnosticism is a collection of ancient religious and philosophical movements that teaches salvation comes through secret spiritual knowledge rather than faith. It can appeal to people who want to know more about God and the spiritual world.

The danger is the idea that someone has found a secret passage, a hidden door, or special information that makes them more spiritual than other believers. Christians must also be careful about claiming that God has shown something only to them.

I don't become more spiritual through secret knowledge. I become more spiritual as the Holy Spirit shows me what I need to repent of and replaces it with the knowledge of Christ.

Jesus is the height of spirituality, not secret knowledge. If Jesus is in us, nobody has a higher spirituality than Jesus. The remaining work is to know the Jesus who is already in us and follow Him in a spiritual walk.

Concerns About the Noahide Laws

I returned to the Noahide Laws because I believe you will hear more about them in the future. In Jewish tradition, these are seven universal moral laws associated with Adam and Noah, later formalized in rabbinic writings such as the Talmud.

The laws discussed include prohibitions on idolatry, blasphemy, murder, sexual immorality, theft, and cruelty to animals. The seventh calls for courts and a legal system to enforce those rules.

On the surface, some of these ideas sound biblical. However, I believe the definitions and consequences in the Talmud must be examined. According to the teaching I presented, classical Talmudic discussion includes capital punishment by the sword for a non-Jew who deliberately violates one of these laws.

My concern is not with Jewish people. I am pro-Jew and pro-Israel. My concern is false teaching, regardless of where it comes from. A moral code cannot make a Gentile acceptable before God apart from the cross of Christ.

I also discussed the modern Noahide movement, including organizations, study groups, prayer communities, and the Noahide World Center. The movement invites non-Jews to follow the Noahide code without converting to Judaism. I stated that Noahide principles overlap with moral requirements found in Islamic Sharia, even though Islam does not use the name "Noahide Laws."

Grace and the Blood Atonement of Christ

I love the Old Testament, but without the New Testament I have no hope. The New Testament reveals Jesus as the Messiah, His blood atonement on the cross, and the grace of God.

The gospel of grace says I am accepted because of the blood of Christ, not because I have completed a set of laws. That is why I believe false teaching will work to deconstruct the New Testament, diminish the cross, and oppose the message of grace given through Paul.

Any teaching that removes the blood atonement of Christ also removes the gospel of grace.

I stated that animal sacrifices did not permanently forgive sin. They were acts of obedience until the next year. Christ's blood was the atonement, and the grace of God is the message tied to that atonement.

The Call to Test and Serve

Every believer has a place in ministry, whether that place is visible or quietly helps others in practical ways. The church should recognize those callings, pray for them, and encourage people to serve.

At the same time, I want every teaching I give to be tested by God's Word. If I have said anything that is not from God, I pray it falls to the ground. If it is from Him, I pray it is quickened in our hearts and draws us into His service.

God's truth, the cross of Christ, and the grace of God remain the measure.
